Combining traditional kirtan with instantly accessible melodies and modern instrumentation, Krishna Das has been called the "rock star of yoga". With his remarkably soulful voice that deeply touches even the most casual listener, Krishna Das - known to friends, family and fans simply as "KD" - has taken call-and-response chanting out of yoga centres and into concert halls, becoming a worldwide icon and the best-selling Western chant artist of all time. To date, KD has released 16 widely acclaimed albums, including Live Ananda (released in January 2012), which was nominated for a Grammy in the Best New Age Album category.
KD spent the late 1960s travelling the country as a student and later close friend of Ram Dass. he finally made the trip to India in 1970, having previously left a rock band in Long Island that later became Blue Öyster Cult. In India, he met Ram Dass' own beloved guru, Neem Karoli Baba, known to most as Maharaj-ji. Under the name Krishna Das, KD began chanting the path of bhakti-yoga, the yoga of devotion. After the death of Maharaj-ji, he found solace in music, but also peace and strength in his yoga chanting practice, including workshops with his long-time friends and teachers of meditation practice Sharon Salzberg and Jack Kornfield.
In 2022, two of Krishna Das' albums will be available for the first time on vinyl in several limited colours exclusively from End Hits Records and Deathwish Inc. The album "Door of Faith" dates from 2003 and was produced by the legendary Rick Rubin, known not only for his groundbreaking rap and rock recordings but also for his definitive work with Neil Diamond and Johnny Cash. The album "Door of Faith" represents KD's sonorous voice and his harmonium, joined here and there by instrumental traces - western strings, brass and keyboards. In a departure from Krishna Das' characteristic call-and-response style, this is a deeply moving collection of solo prayers - the duet with his daughter Janaki on "Mere Gurudev" is a most tender invocation. Krishna Das' 14th album, 2014's "Kirtan Wallah", is a natural confluence of KD's musical currents, creating a heart connection between Indian kirtan and Western rock, between the foothills of the Himalayas and Nashville.
