Myrrh refers to the resin of the myrrh tree, which is native to north-east Africa. The myrrh tree can grow up to 10 metres high; the resin flows through bark incisions and hardens into small reddish-brown resin tears. Myrrh is used in naturopathy for oral care, skin problems, stomach, intestinal, cold and joint complaints. In perfumery it is used as a fixative.

The essential oil myrrh bio (bot. Commiphora myrrha) has a bittersweet, deep, balsamic scent, it has a calming effect and is skin regenerating. The essential oil is often used in intensive skin care formulations and is also well suited for mixtures for oral care. The combination with essential frankincense oil has proven very effective for chapped, cracked skin.
In aromatherapy for the psyche, the scent of myrrh essential oil is also valuable for stabilisation and upliftment, as well as for accompanying mental wounds.

The essential oil is extracted from the resin of a small tree that grows in dry and water-scarce areas of Africa. The resin is collected, dried and sorted. It is then either used as resin (e.g. for incense) or further processed into essential oil or extracts. The botanical names of myrrh are Commiphora myrrha and Commiphora molmol. Both are used synonymously.

Tip 1 Recipe
Skin Protection Balm Frankincense Myrrh
For brittle, very dry skin areas
Melt 25 ml shea butter raw & organic slowly in a water bath. Mix well with 25 ml of organic aloe vera oil in a screw-top glass (50 ml capacity). Drop in 3 drops each of organic myrrh and organic frankincense (formerly Arabic) and stir in. Chilling quickly in the refrigerator helps the shea butter to form a smooth surface again as it hardens. Apply the balm to the affected areas and massage in. Moisturising the skin with a plant water e.g. orange blossom water is ideal.

Tip 2 Recipe
Gurgling Solution Myrrh Sea Buckthorn
For the care of the oral mucosa
In a screw-top glass (100 ml capacity), mix 1 tsp. organic sea buckthorn fruit oil and 5 drops of organic myrrh. Swirl the glass so that a film forms on the rim of the glass. Add 13 g xylitol (birch sugar), screw up, shake. Fill up with 80 ml boiled water. Screw up, mix well. Shake well before use. Rinse/gargle your mouth daily with 10 ml. Use up within 14 days.

Tip 3 Recipe
Mouth spray Peppermint Myrrh
Freshens and soothes unpleasant odours in the mouth
Add the essential oils (1 drop each of organic/demeter peppermint, Manuka, Cajeput extra, organic myrrh, organic/demeter lemon) to 100 ml of peppermint water. Shake well. If necessary, give 2 to 3 sprays in the mouth.
