Cistus is a bushy shrub with hedge-rose-like flowers and thrives in the dry, lime-poor soils of the garrigue and maquis of the Mediterranean region. Cistus is one of the famous aromatic substances of antiquity; it was used as an incense and to prevent disease. In perfumery it is used in (oriental) perfumes, soaps and also in food flavouring. Naturopathy uses cistus in the treatment of skin and lymph.
