Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) is also known as Indian basil or holy basil. In Ayurveda, it is also called "The Incomparable", "Nature's Mother Medicine" and "The Queen of Herbs" due to its numerous supportive properties. Tulsi is also known to balance all three doshas. Daily consumption of the Tulsi herb is said to promote general well-being, support longevity and help with stress management, among other benefits, according to Ayurvedic texts.

Tulsi has the following properties:

• Rasa (taste) is spicy (katu) and bitter (tikta).
• Guna (physical quality) is light (Laghu), dry (Rooksha) and pungent (Tikshana).
• Virya (potency) is hot (Ushna).
• Vipaka (effect) is sharp (katu).
• Tridoshik (balances all three doshas according to Ayurveda).

In Sanskrit, the word Tulasi means "incomparable". This is due to its various wellness-enhancing properties. Tulsi is also sometimes called surasa (loved by the gods) and devadundubhi (having a divine vibration). According to Ayurveda, Tulsi has a high sattva content and increases ojas and prana, two life forces in the body. Ojas, according to Ayurveda, promotes joy, vitality and a healthy immune system, while prana is described as the vital life force of the body that supports intelligence, communication and perception.
