The Latin name Artemisia is derived from the Greek goddess Artemis, the protector of wild animals, women and children. Artemis was skilled in herbal medicine, which was used, among other things, to relieve typical women's ailments.
The ancient Germanic tribes also called mugwort a solstice belt. They used it specifically to drive away ghosts and demons, but also to protect and bless, and to accompany the deceased's transition into the afterlife.
When smoked, mugwort spreads the typical spicy scent of smoking herbs. It is well suited for incense blends.
